David Caldwell Biography
Caldwell Academy is proudly named for David Caldwell,
Guilford County's outstanding Revolutionary War Era minister, educator,
farmer, statesman, physician, and devoted family man. His was a
life well lived; a life worthy of introducing to our students.
Born in Pennsylvania in 1725, he came to this region to serve as
pastor of both Buffalo and Alamance Presbyterian Churches.
Among his many achievements, Dr. Caldwell started
the David Caldwell Log College, the first school-house located
in Guilford County. The Log College was a classical school where
many future ministers, governors, statesmen, doctors, educators,
and lawyers received their foundational education.
Dr. Caldwell was known for his habitually cheerful
disposition as he tirelessly devoted his life to the temporal and
spiritual well being of this region of North Carolina. He loved
God and he loved his fellow man. In short, David Caldwell gave
witness to the reality that our chief purpose in life is to glorify
God and enjoy Him forever.
