Debate
The first year of Rhetoric study at Caldwell
Academy (9th grade) is an
introduction to cross examination debate. This includes an overview
of the
debate process and procedures, building the debate case, research
and
reasoning, refutation, cross examination, and effective delivery.
10th through 12th graders in the Rhetoric School are afforded the
opportunity to participate in a Forensics elective. This includes
their
choice of participation in competitive interscholastic cross examination
debate, original oratory, extemporaneous speaking, and oral interpretation
of humorous or dramatic literature, poetry, or prose. In addition,
intramural opportunities for performances will be provided. Being
a winsome, persuasive communicator is one of the most valuable
skills for every stage of life. Forensics is an enjoyable and effective
laboratory for the
discovery of talents related to persuasion and the development
of the
constellation of skills that work together in good communicators.
Forensics/Debate - This class is for students desiring to compete
with other
schools and perform within the Caldwell program in cross examination
debate
(two-person teams), original oratory (write your own speech!), extemporaneous
speaking (think it up quickly!), interpretation (reading/acting
humorous
or dramatic literature-poetry-prose), and several other categories.
A mixture of diligent research and response
to
coaching will lead to fun competition, some travel, and the satisfaction
of being a part of a competitive forensics team.
